The Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5 is part of the W108 model series, the top-of-the-range model produced by Daimler-Benz from mid-1965 to the fall of 1972. Even back then, the Mercedes S-Class was the benchmark for luxury and comfort. Not only in Europe but worldwide, it was the vehicle of choice for successful entrepreneurs and heads of state. Following American legislation, the limousines for the USA were offered with two round sealed beam headlights arranged one above the other with greater light intensity, which are still installed in the vehicle on offer. The car was repainted in its original color ten years ago and is otherwise mainly in its original condition.

According to the owner, the 4.5-liter 8-cylinder engine runs smoothly, and the automatic transmission shifts comfortably, as is typical for this model. Even back then, US export vehicles were designed to be somewhat more "environmentally friendly" as standard. The strict Californian registration regulations were achieved with lower compression and correspondingly lower output, closed tank ventilation, and afterburning of the exhaust gases.
